What happens when you drop a file in

  1. The file stays put. Your browser opens it the same way an image viewer would. There is no transfer, which is why there is no upload bar to watch.

  2. An encoder arrives once. The first job on this site pulls down a compiled build of FFmpeg, roughly 30 MB. It is kept afterwards, so every job after the first starts immediately.

  3. Your own hardware does the job. The work happens in this tab, on your processor. A laptop from the last few years handles short clips in well under real time.

  4. The result lands in Downloads. Assembled in memory and handed straight to your browser. Close the tab and every trace of it is gone.

Variable frame rate causes more problems than it solves

Phones and screen recorders frequently record at a rate that fluctuates, speeding up and slowing down to conserve power or keep up with the display. Editors assume a constant rate, and that mismatch is why audio slowly drifts away from the picture as a clip progresses.

Forcing a fixed rate eliminates that class of problem entirely. The video is resampled to a steady rate, with frames dropped or duplicated where the original wandered.

There is a size effect too. Halving the frame rate roughly halves how much motion the encoder has to describe, which shows up directly in the finished file.

What raising the number does not do

Converting 30 fps footage to 60 will not make it smoother. Frames are duplicated rather than invented, so the motion looks exactly as it did while the file gets larger. Genuine interpolation — generating intermediate frames that never existed — is a substantially heavier process than anything a browser tab can reasonably run.

Common questions

Will 60 to 30 look choppy?

Marginally less smooth during fast motion. For talking-head video the difference is hard to detect.

Will this fix drift in my editor?

Usually. Variable frame rate is the most common cause of progressive desync.

Should I use 24?

Only if you want the film look. It is a stylistic choice rather than a technical improvement.

Does anything get transferred?
