What happens when you drop a file in
The file stays put. Your browser opens it the same way an image viewer would. There is no transfer, which is why there is no upload bar to watch.
An encoder arrives once. The first job on this site pulls down a compiled build of FFmpeg, roughly 30 MB. It is kept afterwards, so every job after the first starts immediately.
Your own hardware does the job. The work happens in this tab, on your processor. A laptop from the last few years handles short clips in well under real time.
The result lands in Downloads. Assembled in memory and handed straight to your browser. Close the tab and every trace of it is gone.
Three formats, three different jobs
MP3 is for listening. Compressed, small, and understood by every car stereo, phone and podcast app ever built. If the file's destination is a pair of ears, this is the one.
WAV throws nothing away. Expect roughly ten megabytes a minute, which is a lot — but it is the right choice when the audio is heading into an editor, a DAW or a transcription tool, because each further compression pass costs a little more.
M4A is the quiet winner. Most video already stores its audio as AAC, and M4A is simply that audio in its own container. Choosing it copies the track across untouched: fastest option, zero loss, nothing recompressed.
If you only care about quality, this is the answer
M4A wins outright, because there is no decode-and-recompress step at all — what comes out is bit-for-bit what was inside the video. The single reason to choose otherwise is compatibility: some older hardware still expects MP3 and will refuse anything else. Every year that argument gets weaker.

Which should I use for a podcast?
MP3. Every host expects it and every listening app handles it.
Can the audio come out better than the original?
No. Whatever is inside the video sets the ceiling. WAV preserves what is there; it cannot add what was never recorded.
The conversion failed on my file.
Most often the recording has no audio track at all, which happens when the capture software never had microphone access.
Does my video leave the machine?
No. It is read from disk and processed in this tab.
