What happens when you drop a file in
The file stays put. Your browser opens it the same way an image viewer would. There is no transfer, which is why there is no upload bar to watch.
An encoder arrives once. The first job on this site pulls down a compiled build of FFmpeg, roughly 30 MB. It is kept afterwards, so every job after the first starts immediately.

Each format has a job it does badly
PNG records every pixel precisely and never approximates. That is exactly what a screenshot, a logo or a diagram needs, because JPEG's artefacts congregate around sharp edges and flat colour where they are impossible to miss.
Photographs are the opposite case entirely. No flat regions, no crisp boundaries — so PNG's precision buys nothing anyone can perceive while inflating the file several times over.
The heuristic that almost never fails: if it came from a camera, JPEG. If it contains text or hard lines, PNG. Convert a screenshot to JPEG and a faint halo appears around every character.
Transparency has to become something
JPEG has no concept of an alpha channel, so anything see-through in the PNG must be filled. This fills it white, which suits far more images than black would. If the transparency is load-bearing, JPEG is simply the wrong destination and no setting changes that.
Common questions
How much quality is lost?
JPEG discards detail deliberately. At High the difference is invisible in ordinary viewing; at Small it shows in fine texture if you look.
My transparent background turned white.
That is expected — JPEG cannot store transparency at all.
Should screenshots go through this?
Usually not. Sharp edges are precisely what JPEG handles worst.
Does the file leave my machine?
